UGC 2025 Update: Students Can Pursue Two Degrees Simultaneously
In a significant move aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has partially modified its guidelines to allow greater flexibility for students to pursue two degrees simultaneously — either in physical, online, or distance modes. This update, approved in the 589th Commission meeting held on 3rd April 2025, aims to empower learners through multidisciplinarity and flexible learning pathways.Key Highlights of the Modified UGC Guidelines
- Students can now pursue two full-time physical degree programmes simultaneously, provided their class timings do not overlap.
- They may also pursue:
- One full-time physical degree + one ODL/Online degree
- OR two programmes in ODL/Online mode
- Only UGC-approved institutions can offer valid ODL/Online programmes.
- The revised guidelines do not apply to Ph.D. programmes.
What’s New in the April 2025 Modification?
“The updated provision ensures that students who pursued two academic programmes simultaneously before this notification, in compliance with applicable UGC and statutory body norms, will now be recognized as valid degree holders.”Previously, the guidelines did not allow any retrospective benefit. However, the new clause reads:
“Provided that two academic programmes, pursued simultaneously, before issuing of these guidelines, in accordance with the UGC First Degree and Master Degree Regulations… shall be treated as valid.”
Objectives Rooted in NEP 2020
These updated guidelines draw inspiration from NEP 2020, which emphasizes:- No rigid separations between academic streams
- Fostering holistic and flexible learning
- Encouraging interdisciplinary education and lifelong learning
- Preparation for meaningful life roles and economic independence
Implementation Instructions to Universities
The UGC has directed all universities and affiliated institutions to:- Take immediate steps to implement these guidelines
- Devise internal mechanisms through statutory bodies
- Ensure students benefit from the new flexibility without compromise in academic rigor
Conclusion: A Student-Centric Reform
This update marks a progressive shift in India’s higher education landscape. It respects the evolving needs of students seeking diverse learning experiences and ensures flexibility without compromising standards. Whether you’re aiming for a double degree in Arts and Science or combining professional and vocational training, UGC’s 2025 revision brings you one step closer to multidimensional learning. — Simplify Your US Immigration & Visa Journey: https://scikonnect.com/advertising/simplify-your-us-immigration-visa-journey/Check recent jobs here: https://jobs.scikonnect.com/job-category/job/
